Each player posts an ante in the majority of 5 Card Stud games. Most sites do an ante of 1/4 the big bet, for example $0.50 is the ante in a $1/$2 game. This builds up pots, and makes the games more exciting and profitable.
Each player posts the ante, and there is the first round of betting, with the low card by suit required to go first. The two of clubs would be first of all other twos were out for example. Each player is dealt two cards, one face down, the other face up, and the betting begins. The first two rounds the bet and raises are at the lower limit of the stake structure, with the remaining rounds the highest stake.
After the first betting round is complete, each player still on the hand is dealt another card face up, and this betting round is known as third street. There is then a fourth street and a fifth street, with cards dealt face up on both streets.
